What is Banarasi Silk?

In ancient times, this fabric was meticulously crafted by weaving the finest silk alongside Zari thread, often infused with alloys of silver and gold. While contemporary iterations have replaced real gold and silver threads with their color counterparts to enhance affordability, the traditional craftsmanship remains untouched. The intricate process involves a team of three highly skilled artisans, investing around 15 to 20 days and meticulously handling 5600 wire threads to complete a single Banarasi fabric. 

The artisans work in synergy, with one expertly weaving the silk thread, another overseeing the dyeing process, and the final artist meticulously examining the silk bundle, shaping a powerful narrative. The creative journey begins with sketching the border and design on graph paper, translated into hundreds of punch cards that breathe life into the fabric. The meticulous arrangement of these punch cards ensures the envisioned design is flawlessly mirrored on the fabric. The color scheme is carefully chosen, and threads are woven accordingly.
