The Care Protocol

1. The Critical First Wash
Dry Clean Preference: For the first one or two cleans, dry cleaning is highly recommended. This helps set the natural dyes and stabilizes the fragile grid structure of the warp and weft before it encounters full water immersion.
The Vinegar Shield (If washing at home): If you choose to hand-wash from the start, pre-soak the saree for less than 5 minutes in a bucket of cold water mixed with a tablespoon of rock salt or white vinegar. This helps lock in the indigo molecules and minimizes bleeding.

2. Washing Technique
Never introduce this fabric to a washing machine. The friction can distort the square check weave (khats) or snag the delicate threads.

1 Prepare the Bath
Cold water only
Fill a clean basin with cold water and dissolve a mild, pH-neutral liquid detergent (like a silk/wool wash or soapnut extract). Avoid commercial detergents with bleaching agents or optical brighteners, as they will strip natural indigo.
2 Gentle Dip
No scrubbing
Immerse the saree gently. Do not scrub, wring, or leave it submerged for more than 5 to 10 minutes. Natural indigo will discharge excess dye into the water; this is normal bleeding, but prolonged soaking will dull the print.
3 Rinse Thoroughly
Clear water
Drape the saree out of the soapy basin and rinse it under cold, running water until the water runs clear.
4 Extract Water
The towel method
Never wring or twist the fabric to remove water. Instead, lay the saree flat between two clean, white cotton towels and press gently to absorb the excess moisture.

3. Drying and Pressing
Shadow Drying: Always dry your saree flat or draped over a padded hanger in a well-ventilated, shaded outdoor area or indoors. Never expose it to direct sunlight. UV rays break down the natural indigo bonds rapidly, leading to uneven fading.
Ironing: Iron the saree while it is still slightly damp, or use a fine mist spray. Set your iron to the silk/cotton medium setting and always iron on the reverse side to protect the block-printed motif edges.

Storage Wisdom: Store your Kota Doria saree wrapped in a soft, breathable unbleached muslin or cotton cloth. Avoid plastic storage bags, which trap humidity and can cause the natural indigo to oxidize or develop a yellowish tint. Refold the saree every few months along different lines to prevent the delicate grid lines from forming permanent, brittle creases.
