The reversible cylindrical skirt features two distinct hand-block printed faces seamlessly stitched into a dual-layered silhouette. Designed with a traditional nefa (tubular waist casing) and bilateral naara (drawstring) ties, the waist cinch pulls to fit your precise body contours without synthetic elastics or metal hardware. Deep side pockets on both printed faces bring modern utility to zero-waste architecture.

Paired with a matching reversible Sandhi Kurpasaka (wrap top), the set allows you to invert, pair, and layer each piece to unlock multiple distinct visual statements.

Craft & Fabric Description

Crafted from 100% plant-based Modal, a fluid, highly breathable regenerated cellulose fiber derived entirely from natural beech wood (containing zero synthetic fibers and zero silk).

The fabric is patterned using traditional Ajrakh hand-block printing techniques in Kutch, utilizing pure botanical dye baths. The soft yellow-gold and earthy undertones are extracted naturally from naspal (pomegranate peel) paired with natural mineral mordants. Each printed face reflects precise hand-carved teak wood block impressions, celebrating subtle variations that mark authentic hand-craftsmanship.

The Mekhela Sador (Assamese: মেখেলা চাদৰ) is the indigenous traditional attire worn by the women of Assam. While it bears a superficial resemblance to the saree once draped, it is fundamentally different in its architecture, consisting of multiple unstitched pieces rather than a single continuous length of cloth.

The garment is transliterated in various ways, including Mekhla Chador, Mekhela Sadowr, or simply Mekhela Chadar. Regardless of the spelling, the anatomy of the traditional attire consists of three distinct components:

1. The Mekhela (Lower Garment): A wide cylindrical or tubular piece of cloth (similar to a Southeast Asian sarong). It is folded into pleats to fit the waist and tucked in. Unlike a saree, the pleats are folded to the right rather than the left, and because it is a tube, it naturally stays secure.

2. The Sador (Upper Garment): A long length of cloth. One end is tucked into the upper portion of the Mekhela, while the rest is draped across the upper body, pleated over the left shoulder, and allowed to fall behind.

3. The Riha (Inner Wrap): Historically, before stitched blouses became the norm, women wore the Riha—a narrow piece of cloth wrapped tightly around the torso to cover the chest. Today, the Riha is primarily reserved for bridal wear and specific traditional rituals, worn over a modern stitched blouse but underneath the Sador.

Rituals of Care (Wash & Maintenance)

Wash & Care
First Wash: Soak in mildly warm water with a tablespoon salt to set natural botanical dyes.

Subsequent Care: Gently hand wash separately in cold water using a pH-neutral eco-friendly liquid detergent or reetha (soapnut).

Handling: Do not soak, scrub, or wring.

Drying: Line dry inside-out in deep shade away from direct sunlight to preserve natural vegetable dye brilliance.

Ironing: Warm iron on reverse while slightly damp, or steam.
