The yoke on this kurti carries sheesha work — the mirror embroidery tradition rooted in the pastoral and folk communities of Kutch and Rajasthan, where small mirrors were hand-stitched into geometric embroidery as protection and adornment, long before it became a runway motif. Dense diamond and floral stitching in indigo, emerald, and marigold frames the mirrors across the chest panel, finished with a hand-knotted tassel tie in five colors at the neck.

Cut in a relaxed, flared silhouette with side slits for ease of movement, and full sleeves gathered at a mirror-detailed cuff band. The straight-cut hem falls just above knee-length.

Construction & Fit

Sheesha (mirror) embroidered yoke, hand-worked in multicolor thread

Adjustable tasseled tie at the neckline

Long sleeves with an embroidered cuff band, elastic-gathered wrist

Side slits at the hem for ease of movement

Relaxed, flowing fit — true to size

Fabric

Viscose outer with a soft, pure cotton inner lining for breathable everyday wear. Hand wash cold or dry clean recommended to protect the mirror embroidery.

Origin Note

As hand-embroidered craftwork, minor variation in mirror placement and stitch density is part of the piece — not a flaw, but a signature of handwork.

Craft Details

Sheesha — mirror embroidery — comes out of the pastoral and herding communities of Kutch and Rajasthan, stitched by hand into everyday garments long before it ever reached a fashion runway. Small pieces of mica or glass were set into dense, geometric thread-work — diamonds, florals, chain stitch — not as ornament for its own sake, but as protection. In the belief systems of the communities who developed it, a mirror stitched into cloth could catch and deflect the evil eye, turning the wearer’s own garment into a kind of shield. Nomadic and agrarian households carried little that was permanent, but embroidery was portable wealth — skill and meaning stitched into what a person already wore.

This work was never signed, gallery-priced, or trend-named by the women who made it. It was taught hand to hand, mother to daughter, across generations, embedded so deeply into everyday dress that it needed no separate identity as “craft” — it simply was the making of clothes. The mirrors were not applied afterward as embellishment; the stitching around them is what fixes them in place, so removing the mirror-work would mean unmaking the garment itself.

This kurti carries that same construction — the yoke is not printed or appliquéd to look like mirror embroidery, it is built from it, one stitch fixing one mirror at a time. Worn today, far from the herding communities of Kutch, it still carries the same original intention: not just to be seen, but to protect the one wearing it.
